NACA’s Legal Talents Program successfully held Summer Event

On Saturday, July 21, 2018, the National Association of Chinese Americans (“NACA”) successfully held the Summer Group Event of its Legal Talents Program at the conference center of the State Bar of Georgia.

NACA is honored to have Mr. Sam Olens and Mr. L. David Wolfe as speakers for this event.  Mr. Sam Olens is Counsel at Dentons and former Georgia Attorney General.  Mr. Wolfe is a famous criminal defense attorney and President of L. David Wolfe, P.C.

More than 30 people attended this event, including lawyers, visiting scholar, mentors and mentees of Legal Talents Program, law students, and representatives from non-profit legal aid organization, etc.

Ms. Bingzi Hu, Chair of Legal Talents Program, welcomed the attendees on behalf of NACA and introduced the Program to new friends.  Ms. Hu also shared the mentees’ recent achievements – they obtained very exciting job offer or internship opportunity.  The attendees gave the mentees a round of applause and wished them every success in the future.

The topics of this event included: promoting diversity in Georgia’s legal community, positioning young legal talents for public leadership role, and, building career success.  The speakers delivered wonderful speeches on these topics.  Mr. Olens shared the wisdom from his own experience of public service: “Kindness is more important than intelligence.” He also encouraged the Asian community to step out of their comfort zone to participate in public affairs.

Mr. Wolfe is nationally recognized in the area of Criminal Defense since he established his own firm in 1981.  He has handled many cases of national interest, including challenges to Georgia’s Hate Crimes and Assisted Suicide statutes, both of which were struck down by the Georgia Supreme Court as unconstitutional.  He said, while Asian-Americans comprise 5 percent of lawyers in the U.S., he encourages Asian American lawyers to pursue public leadership roles.

Since 2018, NACA proudly launches the Legal Talents Program. This program aims to cultivate young legal talents and future leaders of the Asian legal community. Through this Program, NACA connects young lawyers and law students (mentees) with experienced practicing attorneys (mentors), who will share their career advice, practice experience, and provide leadership guidance to the mentees.  This Program serves NACA’s three missions: bridging cultures, building leaders, and benefiting communities.

NACA thanks the speakers and all participants for joining the event and playing an important part in making it a great success.  The Legal Talents Program is going to hold more events this year.  Look forward to seeing you there!
