Local Elections in the US# As the U.S. debates the right to privacy in the internet age, Californians will lead the national debate when they vote on a bill in November. Proposition 24, the Consumer Personal Information Law and Agency Initiative, addresses the heart of the nationwide data surveillance and privacy law discussion. It would require companies in California to request permission from individuals to share their data and set up a new agency to oversee consumers’ data privacy.

To get on the ballot, supporters of Proposition 24 needed to get over 600,000 registered voters in California to sign a petition which shows their interest in voting on this issue during the election. The campaign ended up submitting over 900,000 signatures to the California government to make it onto the ballot in the November general election.

Many times laws that are enacted in one locality set a precedent and later go on to more widespread adoption throughout the country.

Would you want companies to request your permission to share your data before doing so?
