National Religious Freedom Day, January 16

Since 1993, the President of the United States has proclaimed January 16 as National Religious Freedom Day, commemorating the Virginia General Assembly‘s adoption of Thomas Jefferson‘s landmark Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom on January 16, 1786.

Jefferson said the “freedom of religion [is] the most inalienable and sacred of all human rights.”

Religious freedom is enshrined in the U.S. Constitution. The First Amendment of the Constitution says that “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof … .” These words, known as the Establishment Clause, are the basis of ongoing debate in the U.S. They have required the court to strike a delicate balance between not endorsing a particular religion and not suppressing people’s free expression of religion.

Religious freedom is the birthright of every individual, enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. People everywhere seek to practice their religion and even defend each other’s right to do so.
