As a famous historical and cultural city,Foshan enjoyed the reputation of being one of the"four famous towns"in China during the Ming and Qing dynasties.

The Song dynasty kiln sites of theQishi(StrangeStone)Kiln and the Wentouling Kiln in Foshan recently appeared on the shortlist of the"2022Top10NewArchaeologicalDiscoveries in China".As the only archaeological project selected in Guangdong among the32projects in the country, these two ancient kiln sites immediately drew wider attention.

At the end of last year,Foshan was officially approved by a unanimous vote to join the"Maritime-Continental Silk Road Cities Alliance".The Qishi Kiln and the Wentouling Kiln sites are also recognized as cultural relics of the Maritime Silk Road.

Though they have not been well-known before,a major archaeological discovery has brought them to light to get such recognition and attention.

After scientific excavation and demonstration, archaeologists confirmed that the Qishi Kiln and the Wentouling Kiln were the origins of some of the sauce glaze pots on the sunken ship"Nanhai No.1"in the Song Dynasty. It can be concluded that the"Nanhai No.1"probably docked in Guangzhou800years ago to load goods.

"Nanhai No.1"is a wooden ancient sunken ship that was wrecked and sunk during the early Southern Song Dynasty when transporting porcelain along the Maritime Silk Road. This is the first sunken ship site found in China and is also the oldest, largest, and most complete ocean-going trade merchant ship found in the world so far.

On the other hand, these two ancient kilns have also brought us a new understanding of the extraordinary position of Foshan as an important ceramic producer on the ancient Maritime Silk Road.
